building In 1819, when Henry W. Longfellow, America's native son, was 12 years old, Henry Bailey opened a general merchandise store at Ingraham Wharf.

In 1867, the year following Portland's great fire, Henry Bailey died and the business was carried on by his son, F.O. Bailey, who in the same year took as a partner Charles W Allen, a young farm boy from Poland, Maine.

In 1912, on the death of Charles Allen, his son Neal W Allen was elected president. Franklin B Allen joined his father in 1947 and became president in 1969.

In 1977, Joy and Jack Piscopo purchased the company and have continued its reputation of consistency and integrity coupled with their own enthusiasm and knowledge of the antique market.
